Medication Safety Program Consultative Arrangements

The Commission’s Medication Safety Program is advised by a number of standing committees and other advisory groups related to specific projects or initiatives. Ensuring appropriate representation is critical to the applicability and utility of program resources developed for health professionals, consumers and organisations. In addition, and in relation to specific initiatives, the Commission will consult more broadly by inviting comments from specific groups or generally.

Medication Reference Group

The Medication Reference Group provides high-level, strategic advice to the Commission on medication matters. It first met in July 2009 and is chaired by Professor Lloyd Sansom AO. It includes health professional, consumer, academic, policy, research, regulatory, private and public sector representatives.

Health Service Medication Expert Advisory Group

The Health Service Medication Expert Advisory Group advises the Commission on the NIMC, other national standardisations and related issues. It includes public and private hospital, health professional, professional organisation, paediatric and policy representatives. It is a sub-committee of the Medication Reference Group.

Medication Continuity Expert Advisory Group

The Medication Continuity Expert Advisory Group advises the Commission on improving the quality of medication information transferred in and across care settings. It also advises the Commission on its role as Lead Technical Agency as part of Australia’s involvement in the World Health Organization’s High 5 Patient Safety Initiative. It includes public and private sector, consumer, academic, health professional, professional organisation and policy representatives. It is a sub-committee of the Medication Reference Group.

Anticoagulation Working Group

The Anticoagulation Working Group advises the Commission on NIMC modifications required to improve the safe and appropriate use of venous thrombo-prophylaxis and on national requirements for a specialist anticoagulation chart. The group is a sub-committee of the Health Services Medication Expert Advisory Group. It includes public and private sector, academic, health professional, and policy representatives. It is a sub-committee of the Medication Reference Group.

National Residential Medication Chart Reference Group

The National Residential Medication Chart Reference Group advises the Commission on its Commonwealth-funded project to develop a nationally standard medication chart for use in residential aged care facilities. It includes public and private sector, consumer, academic, health professional, industry organisations and policy representatives.

The National Residential Medication Chart is expected to be available for aged care services in the latter half of 2013.

National Insulin Form Pilot Advisory Group

The National Insulin Form Pilot Advisory Group advises the Commission on national piloting of the draft National Subcutaneous Insulin Form. It includes public and private sector, academic, health professional, professional organisation and policy representatives. It is a sub-committee of the Medication Reference Group.

Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee

The Antimicrobial Stewardship Advisory Committee advises the Commission on effective antimicrobial stewardship program strategies and on conduct of the  Antimicrobial Stewardship Program. It includes public and private sector, academic, health professional and policy representatives.

Labelling Recommendations Reference Group

The Labelling Recommendations Reference Group advises the Commission on maintenance of the National Recommendations for User-applied Labelling of Injectable Medicines, Fluids and Lines. It includes public and private sector, academic, health professional, industry organisations and policy representatives. It is a sub-commitee of the Health Services Medication Expert Advisory Group.

Outcomes of the group’s deliberations are reflected in the Labelling Recommendations Issues Register and in the Labelling Recommendations Frequently Asked Questions.
